Our most recent blog is by Project Officer, Sandra Lavergne. In this blog, Sandra explains what our Thistle Assistance initiative is, and why it’s important.
At SEStran, we’re committed to supporting a transport network that works for everyone regardless of age, ability, or personal circumstances. One of the ways we’re doing this is through our Thistle Assistance programme. Thistle Assistance has been designed to make every day journeys easier for people who need a bit of extra support – it’s a simple, practical tool that promotes dignity, confidence and inclusion.
So, what is Thistle Assistance? It’s a free card and mobile app that helps people communicate that they need additional assistance when travelling. It’s particularly helpful for those with hidden disabilities, health conditions, age-related mobility challenges, or anyone who may not feel confident asking for help directly.
The card comes with easy-to-understand stickers, allowing users to personalise their card which can then be discreetly shown to transport staff to let them know what kind of support they need. This might be extra time getting to their seat or help knowing when they have arrived at their stop. The app offers the same functionality in a digital format, making it even more accessible.
We provide Thistle Assistance across all of Scotland, on behalf of the other regional transport partnerships, and we work with public transport providers to ensure their staff recognise Thistle Assistance, and its purpose, when shown. Thistle Assistance is also part of Scotland’s Accessible Travel Framework delivery plan for 2024-2026, and as such has the support of the Scottish Government.
Scotland’s population is diverse, and so are people’s travel needs. Around 23% of the population live with a limiting long-term physical or mental health condition. For these individuals, even short journeys can be more complex and stressful than they are for others.
We know that the average journey distance for disabled people is just 3.3 km, compared to 4.4 km for non-disabled people. That difference reflects barriers that need to be addressed, and we hope that Thistle Assistance can help close this gap. And with 19% of the population in our country now aged 65 or older (and this number is expected to grow) it is likely that more people will require support while travelling.
One of the strengths of our Thistle Assistance programme is how easy it is to use. There are no complex sign-up processes or eligibility requirements. Anyone who feels they would benefit from a bit more understanding or help when they travel can use the service. And, feedback from users has been overwhelmingly positive. Many people say the card gives them reassurance, making it easier to travel independently without having to explain their circumstances every time.
Thistle Assistance is a key part of our shared commitment to accessible travel. By helping people communicate their needs clearly and comfortably, it ensures that our transport system can respond more effectively to everyone who uses it.
At SEStran, we believe that travel should be inclusive, welcoming, and safe for all. Programmes like Thistle Assistance bring us closer to that goal, one journey at a time.
